Hemianopsia: Understanding the Partial Loss of Vision
Hemianopsia is a neurological condition characterized by a partial loss of vision in either the left or right half of the visual field in both eyes. This condition does not affect the entire vision but significantly impacts the affected side, making everyday activities such as reading, driving, or navigating spaces challenging. Hemianopsia typically results from damage to the visual pathways in the brain rather than the eyes themselves.
The visual system is complex, with signals from the eyes transmitted to the brain’s occipital lobe for processing. When there is damage to these pathways—often due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, or certain neurological diseases—the brain cannot process visual information from one side of the visual field. Homonymous Hemianopsia: Loss of the same side of vision in both eyes, often caused by lesions in the brain’s occipital lobe or optic tract.
Heteronymous Hemianopsia: Loss of opposite halves of vision in each eye, such as bitemporal or binasal hemianopsia, usually linked to damage near the optic chiasm.
Quadrantanopia: Loss of vision in one quarter of the visual field, a partial form that can affect either the upper or lower quadrant.
Symptoms of hemianopsia vary depending on the extent and location of brain damage. Common indicators include difficulty reading, bumping into objects on the affected side, neglecting items or people within the lost visual field, and increased risk of accidents. In some cases, patients may not initially notice the visual deficit, particularly when it develops gradually, which can delay diagnosis.
Diagnosis of hemianopsia involves a comprehensive eye examination and neurological assessment. Visual field testing is a key tool used by eye care professionals to map areas of vision loss. Brain imaging techniques, such as MRI or CT scans, help identify underlying causes like strokes or tumors that may be contributing to the condition.
